Is selling betta Online Profitable?
This month I have highest Gross Revenue from selling fishes, so I decided to sit down and calculate how much profit I make. Well lets dive straight into it:
*Selling Cost included label fee, payment vendor fee and thrid party fee.
No, so far it hasn't been profitable
So after a "great" selling month, I am at loss for -$259. This isn't considered all the labor I put in, time and effort spent to take care fishes, packing shipment. A lot of time to take individual bettas to post up website, support to customers, manage social media account and setup website.
But, there are ways to improve
As a single owner shop and working on this part-time, I cannot go quantity. I think the best I can do is one shipment 300 fishes every month. Things I think I can improve to reduce cost for business in future:
- Install Solar Panels : big cost up-front but saving a lot electricity in long run, I hope to save $150-200 a month for electricity
- Cut back in Ads: once people know me, and I can get consistent orders I can reduce this cost by $100
- Slowly transition out of ebay: 3rd party take too much fee, not only on item price but also on shipping price, on average eBay take $7-15 from every order. But eBay did help me move a lot fishes when I started out this business.: Save another $200 here
- Negotiate better deal with Oversea Sellers: $100
So, if everything goes well
By this time next year, I hope I can make $500 profit a month (if you call that profit for endless hours of labor)
Now you know the answer, if you think breeding/selling betta for profit, think again :D without passion I don't think there is anyone would do this. We do this so you can enjoy your hobby and have a nice little fish you love!
