    Product description

Live Betta channoides – Snakehead Betta (Wild Species)

One of the most captivating wild betta species in the hobby, Betta channoides — commonly known as the Snakehead Betta — is a mouthbrooding species native to the blackwater streams of Borneo. With its elongated body, iridescent scaling, and bold finnage, this rare gem is a prized centerpiece for species-only or biotope aquariums.

Unlike common domestic bettas, B. channoides is a peaceful wild species that can be kept in pairs or small groups, making it a fascinating and rewarding fish for experienced hobbyists.

    Why Aquarists Love Betta channoides

    • Rare wild species — seldom available in the hobby
    • Mouthbrooder — fascinating natural breeding behavior to observe
    • Peaceful compared to domestic bettas; can be kept in pairs
    • Stunning iridescent coloration that intensifies during courtship
    • Ideal for blackwater biotope or species-only setups

    Care at a Glance

    • Tank Size: 10–20 gallons minimum (pairs or small groups)
    • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)
    • pH: 4.0–6.5 (soft, acidic blackwater conditions)
    • Diet: Live and frozen foods preferred — baby brine shrimp, micro worms, daphnia, small insects
    • Behavior: Peaceful; males may spar but rarely cause serious injury
    • Tank Setup: Heavily planted with driftwood, leaf litter, and dim lighting to mimic Bornean blackwater streams
    • Breeding: Paternal mouthbrooder — male holds eggs and fry in his mouth for 10–14 days

💡 Tip: Use RO or soft water with Indian almond leaves or peat filtration to achieve the low pH and tannin-rich conditions B. channoides thrives in. Avoid strong currents — they prefer still or slow-moving water.
