Fissidens fontanus, better known as Phoenix Moss, is one of the prettiest mosses you can put in a nano tank. The fronds grow in tight, overlapping layers that look like tiny green feathers, giving your scape a soft, mature, three-dimensional look that flat mosses just can't match.
Because it's already attached and filled in on the mesh, there's no tying, gluing, or waiting months for coverage. Set it down and it's done.
Why Phoenix Moss
- Feathery texture that makes driftwood and rock look naturally aged
- Grips surfaces with rhizoid-like anchors, so it holds onto wood and stone better than most mosses
- Shrimp love it — the dense fronds trap biofilm and give baby shrimp a place to hide
- Slow growing, so it holds its shape without constant trimming

Care Guide
- Lighting: Low to medium — high light will invite algae onto the fronds
- Temperature: 72-82°F. It looks its best on the cooler end, around 76-78°F
- pH: 6.0 - 7.5
- CO2: Not required, but it thickens up noticeably faster with it
- Growth rate: Slow to moderate
- Difficulty: Easy
- Placement: Foreground or midground — on substrate, tucked into hardscape, or attached to wood
How to Use It
- Rest the mesh pad on the substrate, or wedge it into your hardscape where it gets gentle flow
- Give it clean, moving water — stagnant spots collect detritus in the fronds
- Keep parameters stable. Sudden swings are the main cause of melting
- Once it grows out, snip off sections and glue or tie them to other wood and rock to spread it around your scape
- If it collects debris, a gentle turkey-baster blast during water changes clears it out
Good Tank Mates
Pairs beautifully with bettas, neocaridina shrimp, snails, and small schooling nano fish. In a planted betta tank the fronds double as resting spots.

🐠 Acclimation Guide
- Temperature Match:
Make sure the bag water is close to your tank temperature. - Float the Bag:
Place the sealed bag in your tank for 15–20 minutes. - Water Mixing:
Gradually add small amounts of tank water into the bag over 15–20 minutes. - Release:
Gently net the fish into the tank.
